What’s the Best Food for Kittens?

If the mother cat is healthy her milk is best for her kittens. One way to know is looking at her fur, whether it’s shiny and clean. Her size and weight is another important factor. Does the mother look well fed and energetic? Has she had the recommended vaccinations to prevent major feline diseases? Do her kittens seem to be growing and having plenty of milk to drink when she nurses them?

If the answers to the above questions are positive, then probably the mother cats milk is OK. A veterinarian will be able to diagnose malnutrition in kittens and recommend a milk substitute when needed. It is fairly easy to feed kittens with a small bottle. The vet will also give instructions for introducing solid food to the kittens’ diet when the time comes for weaning.

Any time the mother cat doesn’t seem to be doing a good job of taking care of the kittens feeding and or cleaning, by all means help her out. The proper growth and development of cats and kittens depends on them getting adequate nurturing and nutrition when they are young. Happy kitten raising. Hugs, Rosalyn
