What’s So Special About Cat Breeds?
There are around 100 breeds of cats. What’s so special about them is the rarity of ever finding a pure breed cat running around in the street. A pure breed cat is a cat which meets the specific traits characteristic of a certain class of cat. Only 3% of domestic cats are pure bred.
A cat can be registered as belonging to a certain breed when the owner can show a documented pedigree back four generations. There are other ways of recognizing cat varieties instead of by their breeds. Through selective breeding cats can be produced for specific characteristics such as cats that don’t shed or cats for allergy sufferers.
Pure bred cats make up such a small part of the cats that are available to adopt that the cost is very high. Such a cat can cost in the hundreds or thousands of dollars to purchase. Most pure bred cats are bought to compete in cat shows put on by cat registry organizations.
