How to take care of kittens abandoned by their mother?

First of all make sure the kittens are warm by making them a bed in a box with towels for warmth.  You can also hold the kittens close to your body for warmth. Its a good idea to take the kittens to the vet for an exam to learn whether they have any life threatening diseases. The vet will tell you what to feed them. Usually milk substitutes for baby kittens are available in pet stores. Cows’ milk is not suitable for kittens.

The kittens will need to be bottle fed every two hours around the clock for about three weeks. Newborn kittens must also be stimulated in order to urinate and poop. After meals use a warm cloth to rub the little ones underneath the tail. A cotton ball will also do this job. You also need to bathe the kittens with a soft cloth to help them stay clean. Remember the mother would often lick the babies clean and they need this touching to develop properly. You are taking over for the mother in this situation by providing the same nurturing for the kittens.

Bringing baby kittens into the home is similar to having a baby child in the home. You have to feed them, clean them, hold them, touch them and keep them safe. Even though raising kittens is time consuming and tiring, the rewards are wonderful! You will have a special bond with them and usually they will be very loving, very good pets. Hugs, Rosalyn
